Yankees former All-Star, broadcaster Murcer dies Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former New York Yankees outfielder and broadcaster Bobby Murcer has died from brain cancer, the Yankees said on Saturday.

Murcer, 62, had a 17-year career in the Major Leagues from 1965. He spent 12 seasons with the Yankees, and also played for the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.

Murcer was a five-time All-Star and had a career batting average of .277 and hit 252 home runs and 1,043 RBIs.

Murcer found his second niche in broadcasting, where he worked for the Yankees for the better part of the past 24 years.

"Bobby Murcer was a born Yankee, a great guy, very well-liked and a true friend of mine. I will really miss the guy," Yankees chairman George Steinbrenner said in a statement.

Murcer is survived by his wife and two children.

I remember watching Bobby play when I was a kid. He was and will always be a NY favorite.

While Republican incumbent, Rep. Vito Fossella is contemplating his political future due to a recent scandal, Democrat Steve Harrison is fighting for the chance to serve NY-13.

(Staten Island/Brooklyn) Vito Fossella’s Democratic opponent for the Staten Island/Southwest Brooklyn based NY 13th Congressional District seat, Steve Harrison, has received a flurry of endorsements recently including a 2800+ person strong independent New York City group that’s part of a national grassroots network founded by Howard Dean. Other recent Harrison endorsements include two African American political leaders, a union president and Staten Island and Brooklyn district leaders.

Democracy for New York City (DFNYC), which is part of a coalition of independent grassroots groups nationwide belonging to the Democracy for America” (DFA) network, has endorsed Harrison with an unprecedented 100 percent of the vote. DFA was founded by Democratic National Committee chair and former presidential candidate Howard Dean and is run by his brother Jim.

Organizer Tracy Denton says her organization will provide troops for Harrison.

"We are very excited to mobilize our volunteer base to help Steve Harrison, a solid Democrat who will not be afraid to stand up on the issues that matter."

NEW YORK -- Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons said Monday that the recording and broadcast industries should consistently ban three racial and sexist epithets from all so-called clean versions of rap songs and the airwaves.

Currently such epithets are banned from most clean versions, but record companies sometimes "arbitrarily" decide which offensive words to exclude and there's no uniform standard for deleting such words, Simmons said.

The recommendations drew mixed reaction and come two weeks after some began carping anew about rap lyrics after radio personality Don Imus was fired by CBS Radio and NBC for referring to the players on the Rutgers university women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

Expressing concern about the "growing public outrage" over the use of such words in rap lyrics, Simmons said the words "bitch," "ho" and "nigger" should be considered "extreme curse words."
