Contemporary art gets plenty of room to breathe at this venue on the Hudson.

In Short
The space--a former printing factory renovated by artist Robert Irwin and the architectural firm Open Office--sprawls over 300,000 square feet. Most of its galleries have loft-like proportions and unbelievable natural light. Whether it's a zigzagged row of Dan Flavin neons that unfolds like a Jacob's Ladder, or Richard Serra's voluminous spirals of steel, Dia features notable single-artist displays. This is a one-of-a-kind place to experience minimal and conceptual art on the East Coast.

In Short
This riverfront beach basks in man-made glory. With a fenced-in plot of sand (hauled in from Jersey) packing a volleyball net and picnic tables, this is where Manhattanites escape to California--or their closest attempt at it--if only for an afternoon. Two-dollar Pabst Blue Ribbons, tropical cocktail blends, and grilled hot dogs and burgers are the brainchilds of Brooklyn's Schnack owner. Beach chairs--but not coolers--are welcome.

Malibu Rum is jetting revelers across the river to this beach bar's Caribbean-themed weekend parties.

Insider Tips
When to Go
Nab a free ride Saturday through Monday between 7:50pm and 1am. The water taxis will take off from Piers 63, 45, and 17, as well as Fulton Ferry and East 34th Street.

Know Before You Go
Unfortunately, though Malibu is sponsoring, there's no free booze.
